Yoga is a process by which the laws of Nature are intelligently and deliberately applied to daily life in order to realize in full selfconsciousness, one's identity with the Supreme. It is based on the theory that the real man is not his body. The real self is a spirit which uses the body as an instrument. The literal translation of the Sanskrit word, yoga, is "union", and it is taken to mean union of spirit and matter. Since spirit is regarded as belonging directly to Universal Consciousness, it is associated with the higher principles of man and his eternal self. The body on the other hand is impermanent, nonetemal. Thus the union implies a dominance over matter (the body and its lower associations) by spirit.
