The first 60 pages or so profess his sincere belief, and describes some of the many "tests" designed to eliminate trickery from the mediums. Then he starts assisting a medium who admits that the "spirits need help once in a while"... and as time goes on he realises that he has never seen a genuine seance.

this book follows a genuine believer who is slowly drawn into the shadowy world of cynical exploitation of trusting patrons. Because of the slow pace from initial cynic, to believer, to medium assistant to then becoming fully aware of the trickery played on him for so long, you get emotionally involved.
